Turf is a very useful product. A living thing, turf can be used to quickly spruce up a garden and to make it beautiful, tidy and useful for the children to play on and for the parents to use for hosting friends during summer barbeques. Turf also provides an environmental benefit by helping to reduce flooding and of course by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Because turf is so special we thought it would be a good idea to share three interesting things about turf which you probably didn’t know:
The average turf lawn has the equivalent cooling effect of just under ten tonnes of air cooled by an air conditioning unit. This is because turf grass turns water into water vapour. This evaporation has a cooling effect, drawing heat away from air molecules leaving it cooler. The same thing happens when we feel cold immediately after getting out of the shower or bath. Water that makes our skin wet begins to evaporate, cooling down our skin’s surface.
In the United States alone, turf grasses can trap an estimated twelve million tonnes of dust and dirt from entering the atmosphere. Turf also has the benefit of stabilising soil in areas where soil erosion is common place. The root system that turf creates as it develops and matures helps bind the surface and consequently makes it more stable.
Turf is also known to help purify water. It does this by acting as a kind of giant water filter. As water passes through the turf’s surface and through its root system, the root mass itself, as well as microbes in the soil help to break down pollutants and subsequently turf can return cleaner water back to the water table.
Turf then is not just something that should be used because it is pleasing to the eye or a wonderful place for the family to relax and enjoy the sunshine. Turf could be seen as an essential part of every garden.
