Rolawn selected by Oxford University for research project
28th April 2010
Rolawn’s Minster Pro® turf and Screened Loam topsoil have been selected by Oxford University for research trials on behalf of English Heritage.English Heritage and the University of Oxford School of Geography and the Environment have been conducting extensive research on soft capping to learn more about the benefits and disadvantages of the technique when used to protect ancient monuments. Soft capping provides a thermal blanket for ruined wall tops and entails growing vegetation on the top of walls to better manage the moisture content, and decrease weathering.
The School of Geography and the Environment is an intellectually vibrant, research-intensive academic department at the centre of British geography.

English Heritage is funding and directing the Soft Capping Research Project. Its overall aim is to test the performance of soft capping as a method of conserving ruined walls in a wide range of situations based on an integrated programme of field trials and laboratory experiments. The research indicated that this technique could be extremely beneficial to the long term conservation of ruined monuments as well as making considerable savings in maintenance and repair costs.
