Barks and mulches are an easy way to improve the appearance and performance of any garden bed. We supply two different types of bark, Landscaping and Play Grade. Both are of a consistent high quality and supplied from Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) approved sources. The FSC® label means that materials used for the product have been responsibly sourced (www.fsc.org | FSC-C147081). Rolawn is certified to BS EN ISO 9001:2015 and BS EN ISO 14001:2015 to help reassure you that we are operating responsibly and efficiently to deliver products of the highest quality.
Why use a bark mulch?
Mulching is an important part of taking care of your garden and, depending on the material used, has a range of benefits. Applying a mulch will:
provide an attractive, decorative finish to beds and borders
reduce garden maintenance and labour by:
inhibiting weed growth
improving moisture retention through reduced evaporation
reducing the need for irrigation and water usage by up to 50%
reduce plant loss by insulating plant roots in winter
help to regulate the soil's temperature
improve soil structure and fertility
minimise soil erosion by protecting it from rainwater run-off
Choosing the right mulch
Both of our products provide all the benefits detailed above, but do differ in their characteristics, such as colour and appearance. It really comes down to your personal preference as to which product you choose and if you're looking for something more traditional, more colourful, larger bark chippings or less white wood. You can see the two products along side each other in our How to apply bark mulch video.
For a more ornamental or decorative finish we recommend our Play Grade Bark, which has a more appealing appearance, brighter colour and less white wood, making it perfect for use as a decorative mulch as well as a play surface. It contains larger chips or nuggets and the size and shape of the pieces make it more attractive and longer lasting, as they will take longer to degrade than finer, softer materials.
Landscaping Bark is darker in colour and more finely shredded, giving it a more traditional appearance. It still creates a nice finish to beds and borders, but has a higher white wood content. It will degrade slightly quicker than Play Grade Bark, which is great for the fertility and organic content of the soil, but will need topping up a bit sooner.
Rolawn ProMulch® is another option. In addition to the benefits it shares with our bark products, listed above, it offers enhanced protection for your garden in both heavy rainfall and hard droughts, as well as creating a professional finish with its finer, darker appearance.
