How to use a spreader to fertilise a lawn

There are many types of lawn feed available. While liquid feeds can be applied using a watering can, solid feeds are best distributed using a spreader. The spreader helps to ensure an even spread which helps to avoid patchy growth or damage to areas of your lawn.

For an effective slow-release formula, many homeowners use Rolawn GroRight® Lawn Establishment Fertiliser 2kg – designed for even spreading and long-lasting results.

Drop-spreaders

If you are using a drop-spreader, to ensure even distribution it can help to split the fertiliser into two batches, applying the first batch in one direction and the second at right angles to the original direction. Walk over the lawn as if mowing, working up and down the lawn in adjoining straight lines, being careful not to overlap. Remember to close the supply as you turn at the end of each stretch.

Broadcast spreaders

For even distribution over a larger area, a broadcast spreader helps. The RHS recommends that you “set the machine to half the application rate and make adjacent runs at half the distance apart of the machine’s spread. For example, if the extent of the spread is 2m, make the runs 1m apart.”

Achieving even coverage

Whichever method you choose, there are three key points to remember:

  1. Follow the dosage instructions on the feed packet
  2. Water the lawn well after applying a solid feed
  3. Avoid filling a spreader on the lawn itself, as any accidental spills of feed will lead to over-fertilised ‘burnt’ patches.

Calibrating Your Spreader

  1. Calibrating the spreader before application will help you work out the correct distribution rate.
  2. Find a dry, flat area of concrete or paving and chalk out a measured area, for example 4sqm.
  3. Set the spreader to medium and fill it quarter full.
  4. Spread the fertiliser as evenly as possible over the marked area, as if over the lawn, then brush up all the fertiliser within the area and weigh it.
  5. Divide this weight by the area, in this case 4sqm. This tells you the application rate in grams per sqm.
  6. Adjust the machine setting accordingly, and then check the application rate over the same measured area. Repeat the process until the rate is correct.

Important update: Temporary 6.5% surcharge effective 7 April

At Rolawn, we are committed to maintaining the high standards of quality and service our customers expect, so we want to be open with our customers about a change that will affect pricing from Tuesday 7th April.

This decision has been taken in response to disruption to energy supplies, which has led to significant increases in wholesale prices, affecting not only fuel and fertiliser but also costs throughout our wider supply chain. As a business that relies heavily on fuel for both transport and operations, these sustained cost pressures have become increasingly difficult to absorb.

While we have worked hard to mitigate the impact, the scale and pace of recent price increases have now exceeded what we can sustain internally, and we therefore need to recover a proportion of these externally driven increases.

From Tuesday 7th April, a temporary 6.5% surcharge will apply to all products.

We know that any increase in price is frustrating, particularly at a time when many businesses and households are already feeling under pressure. That is why we want to be clear that this is not a decision we have made lightly, and not one we wanted to make. It has been introduced solely to help offset unavoidable cost inflation and allow us to continue delivering the quality, reliability and service standards associated with Rolawn.

We will continue to monitor market conditions closely and will review this surcharge as soon as circumstances allow, providing reasonable notice of any changes. We recognise that any price increase is unwelcome, but this step is necessary to ensure the continuity and reliability of our operations during a period of ongoing uncertainty.

We remain committed to providing the quality, reliability and service standards you expect from Rolawn, and we truly appreciate your understanding and continued support.

If you have any questions, please contact our customer support team who will be happy to help.
